DMEA Enacts Fire Prevention Measures

July 10, 2025

MONTROSE, Colo.—Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) is taking proactive steps by enacting fire prevention measures in response to rising wildfire danger. The decision comes in response to ongoing fire restrictions within DMEA’s service area and the continued dry summer conditions, elevating wildfire risk.

DMEA has shifted into a special fire prevention operating mode to mitigate the threat of utility-related fire starts. This mode limits automated and remotely controlled electrical equipment and prioritizes manual inspections and hands-on work by DMEA’s operations personnel. While this approach significantly reduces fire risk, it may lead to more extended power outages.

“Our fire precaution procedures can extend the length of power outages,” said Cody Carver, DMEA’s Chief Operations Officer. “Under normal operations, we can reconnect much of our equipment remotely. But in fire prevention mode, our crews must patrol the line and visually inspect equipment before restoration. It’s a slower process, and more importantly, it adds necessary protection to reduce fire risk for our communities.”

DMEA coordinates closely with local emergency management officials and land management agencies to monitor fire conditions and align its response. The cooperative also uses tools like the Colorado Wildfire Risk Viewer, weather data, and Red Flag Warnings to guide its decision-making process. Once fire risk drops to a safe level, DMEA will return to standard operations.

“Safety and reliability are always our top priorities,” added Carver. “We appreciate our members’ cooperation and patience as we work with our partners to protect lives, property, and our electrical system during this critical fire season.”

DMEA encourages members to report outages or unusual activity near power lines immediately. A phone call can help line crews locate issues faster and minimize downtime.
