Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) is warning members about a utility scam. Over the last few days,  members have been receiving phone calls from someone posing as a representative from DMEA who is stating their electricity will be disconnected if they do not pay on their delinquent amount immediately. The representative impostor is calling from an 800 number. The authorities have been contacted and are aware of situation. 

If any members receive a call regarding their electric utilities, please verify it is a call from the actual DMEA number of 1-877-687-3632 or 970-249-4572. On some occasions the caller attempts to send members to a supermarket to purchase a pre-paid card and asked them to call a fake 800 number providing the pre-paid card information to the caller so there is no trail of where the payment goes. They may also simply ask for your credit card information, so please do not provide any account information until you verify you are speaking with an actual DMEA representative.

NOTE:  DMEA is closed in the afternoon of the first Tuesday of each month.  Scam calls may be increasing during this time.  Although it may be difficult to reach a live representative during this period, you can still access your account balance(s) by calling the main number (above), selecting option #1, option #1, and entering your account number.  Account access is also available though online bill pay

DMEA was alerted to the scam by several different members.  It appears the primary targets are small businesses, but residents should also beware. Please report any additional information regarding this scam to 1-877-687-3632 or 970-249-4572.
